5 Important Events of Ramadan You Should Know

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a time of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and generosity. It is a sacred period when Muslims worldwide observe fasting, increase their worship, and strengthen their connection with Allah s.w.t.

As the blessed month approaches, let us take a moment to renew our intentions and strive to become better Muslims. May Allah s.w.t. grant us guidance and success in our worship. Aamin.

Allah s.w.t mentions in the Quran:

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ هُدًۭى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَٱلْفُرْقَانِ ۚ فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ ٱلشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ ۖ

“Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the decisive authority. So whoever is present this month, let them fast.“

(Surah al-Baqarah: 185)

Allah s.w.t. has specifically made fasting in Ramadan obligatory and has designated significant events and highlights for us to reflect upon. In this article, we will explore 5 key Ramadan events that are deeply rooted in Islamic history and carry great spiritual significance.

1. The Revelation of Quran

One of the most notable events of Ramadan is the revelation of the Quran.

Allah s.w.t mentions in the Quran:

إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

“Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory.”

(Surah al-Qadar: 1)

According to Ibn Abbas R.A., the revelation of the Quran happened twice. It was first sent down to the skies of the earth on the Night of Laylatul Qadr, a night described as better than a thousand months. From there, it was revealed gradually to Prophet Muhammad over a period of approximately 23 years, addressing specific circumstances and guiding the believers through various challenges.

Ibn Abbas R.A narrated:

 قَالَ: أُنْزِلَ الْقُرْآنُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ جُمْلَةً وَاحِدَةً إِلَى سَمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا، وَكَانَ بمَوْقِعِ النُّجُومِ، فَكَانَ اللهُ يُنَزِّلُهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ ﷺ بَعْضَهُ فِي إِثْرِ بَعْضٍ.

“He said, ‘The Quran was sent down in its entirety on the Night of Decree to the lowest heaven, where it was positioned among the stars. Then, Allah revealed it to His Messenger ﷺ gradually, in portions, one after another."

(Mustadrak ala Sohihain: 4000)

The Quran is a guidance, wisdom, and a source of clarity for all mankind. This event emphasises the spiritual significance of the Quran in our daily lives. Let us use this Ramadan to strengthen our connection with the Quran through recitation, reflection, and implementation in our daily lives.

May Allah grant us the guidance and istiqamah to be better Muslims this Ramadan. Aamin.

2. The Conquest of Makkah

The Great Conquest of Makkah took place in Ramadan, the 8th year of Hijrah, marking a pivotal moment in Islamic history. After years of oppression and hostility, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions entered Makkah peacefully, demonstrating compassion and forgiveness towards its residents. As a result, many embraced Islam in large numbers.

Allah mentions in the Quran:

إِذَا جَآءَ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْفَتْحُ ١ وَرَأَيْتَ ٱلنَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِى دِينِ ٱللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًۭا ٢ فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابًۢا ٣

“When Allah’s ˹ultimate˺ help comes and the victory ˹over Mecca is achieved˺ [1] and you ˹O Prophet˺ see the people embracing Allah’s Way in crowds [2], then glorify the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness, for certainly He is ever Accepting of Repentance. [3]”

(Surah an-Nasr: 1-3)

This peaceful victory transformed the course of Islamic history, allowing the message of Islam to spread across the world. It serves as a timeless lesson in mercy, justice, and humility, reminding us to embody righteousness, kindness, and fairness in our daily lives.

May Allah s.w.t. bless us with the strength to follow the path of righteousness, uphold justice, and spread kindness in our actions. Aamiin.

3. The Battle of Badr

The Battle of Badr, fought on the 17th of Ramadan, was the first major battle in Islamic history and a turning point for Muslims. After migrating to Madinah, the Muslims faced increasing hostility from the Quraysh of Makkah.

Allah mentions in the Quran:

“Permission ˹to fight back˺ is ˹hereby˺ granted to those being fought, for they have been wronged. And Allah is truly Most Capable of helping them ˹prevail˺. [39] ˹They are˺ those who have been expelled from their homes for no reason other than proclaiming, “Our Lord is Allah.” 40]”

(Surah al-Hajj: 39-40)

Initially, the Muslims set out to intercept a Quraysh caravan carrying valuables, intending to redistribute the wealth among the Muslims. However, the situation escalated into a full-scale battle, despite their limited preparation and resources.

Outnumbered, 313 Muslims against 1,000 Quraysh, the Muslims fought with unwavering faith, and Allah granted them a resounding victory. The battle resulted in the deaths of several key Quraysh leaders, including Abu Jahl.

This victory significantly boosted morale, emphasising the spiritual significance of steadfastness, faith in Allah, and the triumph of truth over falsehood among Muslims, as well as strengthening Islam's position in Arabia. It marked a pivotal moment that paved the way for future conquests and the expansion of Islam.

May Allah grant us the steadfastness of the warriors of Badr, the courage to stand for truth, and the strength to persevere in the face of adversity. Aamiin.

4. Laylatul Qadr - The Night of Glory

Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Glory, is the holiest night in Islam, occurring in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. Allah describes it as the night that is better than a thousand months (equivalent to 83 years of worship). Muslims are encouraged to seek and prepare for this night by praying, reciting the Quran, and making supplications throughout Ramadan, emphasising its spiritual significance.

Allah mentions in the Quran:

لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍۢ ٣

“The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months.”

(Surah al-Qadr: 3)

Throughout these nights, the Prophet taught us to regularly recite a particular dua.

As narrated by Aishah R.A

“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your view if I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in it?” He said, ‘Say:

(Allāhumma innaka `Afuwwun [Karīmun], tuḥibbul-`afwa fa`fu `annī).

“O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, [Generous], You love pardon, so pardon me.”

(Tirmidhi: 3513)

May Allah grant us the blessings of Laylatul Qadr, accept our prayers, forgive our sins, and fill our hearts with light and tranquillity. Aamiin.

5. Tarawih Prayer

Tarawih is a special night prayer performed during Ramadan after the Isya’ prayer. It was practiced by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who strongly encouraged his companions to observe it.

Narrated Abu Salama bin `Abdur Rahman:

He asked Aisha R.A "How was the prayer of Allah's Messenger ﷺ in Ramadan?" She replied, "He did not pray more than eleven rak'ahs in Ramadan or in any other month.

He used to pray four rak'ahs - let alone their beauty and length - and then he would pray four - let alone their beauty and length - and then he would pray three rak'ahs (witr)."

She added, "I asked, 'O Allah's Messenger ﷺ! Do you sleep before praying the witr?' He replied, 'O `Aisha! My eyes sleep, but my heart does not sleep."

(Bukhari: 2013)

As a tradition, many of the companions strive to complete the recitation of the entire Quran during Ramadan, allocating portions each night to finish it by the end of the month, emphasising Ramadan's spiritual significance as a time of self-discipline and devotion.

May Allah grant us the strength and sincerity to perform Tarawih and bless us with the rewards of this sacred month. Aamiin.

As Ramadan unfolds, let us seize the opportunity to strengthen our faith, deepen our connection with the Quran, and embody the values of mercy, perseverance, and devotion. These Ramadan events not only shaped Islamic history but also carry profound spiritual significance, offering us timeless lessons and inspiration

May this blessed month bring us closer to Allah s.w.t., fill our hearts with peace, and grant us success in our worship. Aamiin.
