Sadaqah jariyah: which gifts keep giving after you die, and which are one-time relief
Sadaqah jariyah is charity that keeps producing benefit after you die. The test is continuity, and it applies to the giving as much as to the gift. A well built once keeps yielding water. A single cooked meal is eaten and gone. But feeding that continues, funded to keep running, is ongoing charity too. Jariyah attaches to the arrangement, not to the plate.
That distinction decides what your money buys. This page sorts the common projects using the position of Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah rather than a fundraiser's guess, gives the real 2026 cost of each project, and says plainly which of Qohyrah's own products qualify and on what condition.

What is sadaqah jariyah?
The term comes from a narration of Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) from the Prophet ﷺ, recorded by Imam Muslim (رحمه الله). The wording, as printed at Sahih Muslim 1631:
"When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him (for the deceased)."
The same report appears at Sunan an-Nasa'i 3651, graded Sahih by Darussalam, worded as "ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge and a righteous son who prays for him."
The Arabic word is jariyah, flowing. Water that flows has not stopped moving. That is the image the term is built on, and it is the test the rest of this page applies.

What makes a gift ongoing instead of one-time?
The benefit has to outlive the act of giving. Scholars call this dawam, continuity.
Most classical jurists read the hadith as referring specifically to waqf, an endowment where the asset is held permanently and only its yield is given away. Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah, in research fatwa 256, records that reading and then widens it. Its ruling states that الصدقة الجارية أعم من مفهوم الوقف, ongoing charity is broader than the concept of waqf, and it holds that a bequest whose benefits or yield continue perpetually qualifies alongside an endowment made in life.
Mufti Abrar Mirza of Darul Iftaa Chicago puts the operative test in one line: "the essential factor is dawam (continuity): if the charitable act continues to yield benefit over time, its rewards will likewise persist." He applies it well beyond buildings, including to funding access to knowledge.
So the question to ask of any project is not what category a fundraiser filed it under. It is whether the benefit is still arriving a year from now.
Can a cooked meal be sadaqah jariyah?
Yes, if the feeding continues. A single plate handed over once is sadaqah, and it is finished when the person finishes eating. Feeding that is funded to keep going does not finish, and that is what makes it jariyah.
This is the classical model of a feeding endowment. Wealth is held, and its yield feeds people month after month. Dar al-Ifta's Fatwa Committee names it directly among the forms of ongoing charity: وقف المال للإنفاق من ريعه في وجوه الخير ومنها إطعام الطعام, endowing wealth so that its yield is spent on good causes, among them feeding people. The committee's criterion is that the charity runs on for successive generations and reaches many rather than one.
Apply that honestly and the sorting changes. It is not brick against bread. It is once against continuously.
| Gift | Given once | Given continuously |
|---|---|---|
| Cooked meal | Sadaqah | Sadaqah jariyah |
| Family food basket | Sadaqah | Sadaqah jariyah |
| Water delivered by truck | Sadaqah | Sadaqah jariyah |
| Water well or pump | Sadaqah jariyah, the well itself keeps yielding | Sadaqah jariyah |
| Solar panel system | Sadaqah jariyah, while it runs | Sadaqah jariyah |
| A Qur'an that stays in use | Sadaqah jariyah, every time it is read | Sadaqah jariyah |
Infrastructure has an advantage worth naming: it keeps working whether or not you keep paying. Continuous giving has a different advantage. It reaches people who need something now, and it keeps reaching them.
Which gifts actually keep giving?
Four of Qohyrah's projects clear the continuity test. Three do it by what they are. One does it by not stopping.
A freshly cooked halal meal for a student in Egypt every Jumu'ah, month after month, distributed by Qohyrah's own team on the ground since 2020. The meal is eaten. The feeding does not stop.
A well and pump for a Cambodian family, built in roughly 6 to 8 weeks. You can dedicate it to yourself or to someone who has died, and photo or video proof is shared once it is finished.
A solar system for a family living without reliable electricity, so they can study, cook and move around the house after dark. Installed by teams on the ground, with proof shared after installation.
A complete digital Braille Qur'an set with a pen reader, given to a blind Muslim who may otherwise never read it without help. It is dedicated in the name you choose.
The Gaza water trucks and family food baskets are bought as one-off relief today. Ordered month after month, the same reasoning applies to them.

Every Friday in Egypt. The meal is eaten by the evening. The arrangement is what continues.
How much does sadaqah jariyah cost?
Prices below are Qohyrah's retail prices in US dollars, current as of August 2026.
| Project | Cost (USD) | Where | Time to fulfil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed a student, continuous | $15 per month | Egypt | Every Friday |
| Solar panel system | $275 | Off-grid rural communities | On installation |
| Digital Braille Qur'an set | $295 | Recipient chosen at fulfilment | On delivery |
| Water well and pump | $575 | Cambodia | About 6 to 8 weeks |
Most giving pages in this category publish no cost at all. Ask for one before you order anywhere, including here, because a project with no price attached is a project with no defined scope.
How do you know your sadaqah jariyah was actually carried out?
You ask for evidence with a date on it, and you keep asking.
Qohyrah shares photo or video proof after fulfilment on every product in the range, and orders can be refunded in full within 12 hours if you change your mind. Egypt is the one country Qohyrah's own team handles directly and weekly. Everything else is fulfilled through a partner operator, which is normal in this sector and worth knowing rather than glossing over.
The honest state of it: proof reaches customers, and it does not reach every customer at the same speed. That is a known weakness being worked on rather than a solved problem, and you should treat any giving page that claims a flawless proof chain with some suspicion, including this one.
Can you give sadaqah jariyah for someone who has died?
Giving charity on behalf of a deceased person is longstanding practice across the Sunni schools, and it is one of the most common reasons people build a well or gift a Qur'an. Each of the projects above can be dedicated in another person's name at checkout, the monthly one included. On the specific ruling for your situation, ask a scholar you trust rather than a shop.
Frequently asked questions
Can a cooked meal be sadaqah jariyah?
Yes, when the feeding continues rather than stopping at one plate. A single meal is sadaqah and it ends when the meal ends. Feeding funded to keep running is ongoing charity, which is why a feeding endowment is a recognised form of it. Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah's Fatwa Committee lists endowing wealth so its yield feeds people among the forms of sadaqah jariyah.
What is the difference between sadaqah and sadaqah jariyah?
Sadaqah is any voluntary giving. Sadaqah jariyah is the part of it where the benefit keeps arriving after the act, and after your death. The difference is usually continuity rather than the type of gift.
Is sadaqah jariyah the same thing as waqf?
Not quite. Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah's research fatwa 256 holds that ongoing charity is broader than waqf, while noting that most classical jurists read the hadith as referring to endowments specifically. A waqf is one way of doing sadaqah jariyah rather than the only way.
Can I pay my zakat through these projects?
Qohyrah has not published a zakat position. Until it does, treat these purchases as sadaqah rather than zakat, and ask your own scholar or local imam about zakat eligibility.
Is Qohyrah a charity?
No. Qohyrah is a for-profit social enterprise registered in Singapore, operating since 2020. Purchases are not tax deductible and do not qualify for Gift Aid. You are buying a fulfilled service at a stated price, not making a tax-relieved donation.
How long does a water well take to build?
About 6 to 8 weeks from order to completion, after which photo or video proof of the finished well is shared.
The cheapest way to start something that does not stop
Fifteen dollars a month. One cooked meal for a student in Egypt every Jumu'ah, distributed by Qohyrah's own team since 2020. The meal is eaten by the evening. The feeding carries on.
Feed a student for $15 a month →Photo or video proof after fulfilment. Full refund within 12 hours of ordering.
